In the thrilling final match of BPL 2015, Comilla Victorians defeated Barisal Bulls to lift the trophy for the first time in the history of Bangladesh Premier League. Defeating the opponents by 3 wickets, Victorians bagged the title and became the second team to win the league. Dhaka Gladiators is the first team to surmount the championship. Gladiators clinched the title twice and emerged as the only team to register victory in the final matches of two consecutive editions of BPL.
After winning the toss Comilla Victorians opted to bowl first. Opener batsmen Mehedi Maruf and Seekkuge Prasanna started well the batting inning with moderate run rate. Maruf scored 11 runs in 13 balls while Prasanna hit 2 fours and 2 sixes to score 33 runs in 19 balls. After the fall of their wickets, next batsman Sabbir Rahman could score only 9 runs in 19 balls and returned to the pavilion after spending very less time on the field.
Shahriar Nafees and Mahmudullah came to bat next after the downfall of top order of the batting lineup. Partnership between the two cricketers took team’s overall score to the next level. Batting excellently, their performance helped their team in scoring a fine total at the end. Nafees hit 3 sixes and 2 fours to score 44 runs in 31 balls while the skipper smashed 48 runs in 36 balls. Mahmudullah lost his wicket in 20th over and Kevon Cooper came to bat next.
Cooper hit a six to end the inning and his team ended up scoring 154 runs in 20 overs with loss of 4 wickets. Nafees remained not out till the end of first inning. Darren Stevens, Mashrafe Mortaza, Nuwan Kulasekara and Ashar Zaidi picked up one wicket each. Abu Hider Rony and Naeem Islam jnr went wicketless in the first inning of the match. Comilla Victorians began the run-chase with a stuttering start as its opener batsman Liton Das lost wicket in third over of the match.
Middle order batsmen donned defensive stance to score the runs and continued to play safe shots. After one opener batsman was dismissed, Ahmed Shehzad and Alok Kapali accompanied the second opener batsman Imrul Kayes, who played a significant role in the team’s victory. Kayes scored 53 runs in 37 balls with a strike rate of 143.34. Shehzad scored 30 runs in 24 balls while Alok Kapali scored 39 runs in 28 balls.
One end of the strike was continuously being devastated by the rival bowlers and Kapali was strong on the other end. After Kayes and Shehzad lost their wickets, bottom order of the batting lineup could not assist Alok in the run chase and lost the wickets at regular interval of time. However, Kapali remained not out till the end of the inning and brought victory for his team by hitting the winning shot. Victorians won the thrilling game by 3 wickets.
