Rangpur Riders defeated Rajshahi Kings in the second match of Bangladesh Premier League 2017 and won the game by 6 wickets. While batting first, Rajshahi Kings scored 154 runs in 20 overs with the loss of 8 wickets. Rangpur Riders successfully chased the target of 155 runs and registered victory in its first game in BPL 2017.
After winning the toss, Rangpur Riders opted to bowl first. Luke Wright and Mominul Haque, opener batsmen of Rajshahi Kings, could not give a better start to its innings. Wright scored 11 runs in 14 balls while Haque made only 9 runs in 7 balls. Next batsman Ronik Talukdar played crucial role in cementing a strong base for the team’s score.
Hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes, Talukdar scored 47 runs in 38 balls. Wicket-keeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim didn’t manage to accompany Talukdar in scoring good runs. After scoring 11 runs in 8 balls, Rahim lost his wicket in eleventh over of the first inning. Samit Patel batted next after Rahim’s dismissal and he too failed to score big runs individually.
James Franklin and Darren Sammy rendered pivotal role in the end of first inning. Franklin hit 26 runs in 22 balls while Sammy scored 29 runs in 18 balls. With the help of an excellent partnership between the two cricketers, their team’s overall score reached beyond 150. The team ended up scoring 154 runs in 20 overs.
Lasith Malinga and Nazmul Islam picked up two wickets each. Sohag Gazi and Mushrafe Mortaza took one wicket each. Rubel Hossain, Thisara Parera and Ravi Bopara went wicketless throughout the inning. Rangpur Riders started the long run-chase with a decent start as the team lost the wickets of its opening batsmen in initial phase of the game.
Johnson Charles and Amad Lyth returned pavilion without scoring big runs. Next batsmen – Mohammad Mithun and Shahriar Nafees escalated the team’s score with their awesome individual performances. Mithun scored 46 runs in 33 balls and Nafees hit 35 runs in 34 balls. The two players lost their wickets in 13th and 16th over, respectively.
After the collapse of middle order of batting lineup, Thisara Parera and Ravi Bopara played significant roles in dominating the aggression of opposite team. Donning an attacking stance, Bopara hit 39 runs in 29 balls. The right arm English cricketer hit 3 fours and 2 sixes to score those runs.
Thisara Parera was strong at the other end of strike. The left handed Sri Lankan all-rounder cricketer smashed 20 runs in 12 balls. Thus, Rangpur Riders defeated the opponents by chasing 155 runs in 18.5 overs and achieved success in its first game. Ravi Bopara received ‘Player of the Match’ award for his meritorious performance in the match.
