In the sixth match of BPL 2017, Sylhet Sixers defeated Rajshahi Kings and won the game by 33 runs. Batting first, Sylhet Sixers scored 205 runs in 20 overs. The opponents failed to chase the might target in 20 overs and ended up scoring 172 runs. Batsmen and bowlers of Sylhet Sixers played equal roles in the victory.
After winning the toss, Rajshahi Kings opted to bowl first. Opener batsmen of Sylhet Sixers gave a good start to their batting inning. Sri Lankan cricketer Upul Tharanga, who is in a great form now-a-days, scored 50 runs in 37 balls. The left handed batsman smashed 5 fours and 1 six to score those runs.
Tharanga’s companion Andre Fletcher too scored huge runs. The Caribbean cricketer hit 5 fours and 3 sixes to score 48 runs in 30 balls. After the fall of their wickets, Sabbir Rahman and Danushka Gunathilaka came to bat next. Rahman scored 14 runs in 16 balls and lost his wicket in 16th over. Ross Whiteley replaced his as a next batsman to accompany Gunathilaka on the field.
Whiteley hit 3 sixes and 1 four to score 25 runs in 12 balls. Danushka to played a stormy individual inning to score runs fast. Hitting 3 sixes and 2 fours, the Sri Lankan cricketer scored 42 runs in 22 balls. Though bottom order of the batting lineup could not perform well in the end, the team ended up scoring 205 runs in 20 overs with the loss of 6 wickets.
Kesrick Williams picked up two wickets while Farhad Reza and James Franklin took one wicket each. Hossain Ali, Mehedy Hasan and Samit Patel went wicketless in the game. Rajshahi Kings started the long run-chase with a strong opening partnership between Luke Wright and Mominul Haque. Haque scored 24 runs in 16 balls and lost his wicket in 6th over.
Rony Talukdar came to bat next after Haque’s dismissal, but he returned to pavilion without scoring a single. Mushfiqur Rahim tried his best to establish stable company with Williams, who was performing well at the other end of strike, but walked back to the pavilion after scoring just 11 runs in 12 balls. Next batsman Samit Patel too failed to score huge runs and was bowled out on very first ball he faced.
Australian cricketer James Franklin played a good inning in the end but could make his team win the match. He scored 35 runs in 23 balls and lost his wicket in 17th over. Meanwhile, Wright too returned to pavilion after scoring 56 runs in 39 balls. Players in the bottom order of batting lineup couldn’t score the required runs and lost wickets at equal intervals of time.
Skipper Darren Sammy and Mehidy Hasan failed to score double digit runs and lost their wickets after scoring 9 and 8 runs, respectively. Farhad Reza tried his best to decrease the gap between required runs and balls remaining to score the runs, but didn’t manage to do so. The team ended up scoring 172 runs in 20 overs with the loss of 8 wickets.
With this victory, Sylhet Sixers strengthened its first rank in BPL points table. Till now, the team has earned six points from three victories. Led by Bangladeshi cricketer Nasir Hossain, Sylhet Sixers performed excellently in the Sylhet leg. The team is set to confront with other teams in upcoming matches.
