In the first match of ongoing Bangladesh Premier League, Sylhet Sixers defeated Dhaka Dynamites by 9 wickets and took a flying start to its journey in the tournament. While batting first, Dhaka’s team scored 136 runs in 20 overs with the loss of seven wickets. Sixers scored 137 runs in seventeen overs and lost only one wicket while chasing the target.
After winning the toss, Sylhet Sixers opted to bowl first. The decision of inviting opposite team to bat first seemed absolutely right when the opener batsman Mehedi Maruf lost his wicket in the very first over of the match. Another opener batsman Evin Lewis and wicket-keeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara played well in the initial overs.
Lewis hit 3 fours and 1 six to score 26 runs in 24 balls. Scoring 32 runs in 28 balls, Sangakkara to smashed 3 boundaries and hit one six. After the fall of their wickets in the initial stage of the first inning, the middle order batting lineup of their team couldn’t perform well. Mosaddek Hussain, who batted next after Lewis’s dismissal, returned to pavilion without scoring much runs.
Skipper Shakid Al Hasan came to bat next and scored 23 runs in 21 balls. Caribbean cricketer Kieron Pollard and Cameron Delport accompanied the captain with their minor contributions in building total score of 136 runs. Pollard scored 11 runs in 7 balls while Cameron hit 20 runs in 13 balls. Bottom order of the batting lineup too failed to score huge runs in the end.
Showcasing excellent bowling performance, Sylhet Sixers’ captain Nassir Hossain, Abul Hasan and Liam Plunkett picked up two wickets each. Shuvagata Hom, Krishmar Santokie and Taijul Islam went wicketless in the game. Sylhet Sixers started chasing the target with silent approach in initial few overs.
Opener batsmen Upul Tharanga and Andre Fletcher played major role in the team’s victory as their individual performances hiked the overall team score to triple digit figure. Tharanga scored 69 runs in 48 balls. The left arm Sri Lankan cricketer hit 5 fours and 2 sixes to score those runs.
Popular Caribbean cricketer Fletcher, who accompanied Tharanga in the run-chase, scored 63 runs in 51 balls. He smashed 5 fours and 3 sixes to score those runs. In sixteenth over, he returned to pavilion and Sabbir Rahman came to bat next. Tharanga hit the winning shot to end the game. He won ‘Player of the Match’ award for his pivotal contribution in his team’s victory in this BPL T20 match.
